Earlier this week, the former Assam Congress chief had submitted his resignation to the party's high command, writing detailed reasons in his letters.
The Congress high command did not accept his resignation and many senior leaders visited his residence to persuade him to reconsider but Borah remained firm.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also spoke to him and later Borah had sought time to rethink his decision, but a day later Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited his home.
Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday announced that Bhupen Borah will join the BJP on February 22.
After meeting Union home minister Amit Shah, Borah wrote in a post, “32 years vs 32 hours — the difference is visible.”

Grateful to the Hon’ble Union Home Minister Sjt. @AmitShah Ji for yesterday’s meeting, and to our Hon’ble Chief Minister Sjt. @himantabiswa deu for visiting my residence the day before.
Change brings clarity.” pic.twitter.com/KTQqo0k0BT
Bhupen Borah had earlier also shared about his 32-year political career, highlighting his rise from MLA to Assam Congress chief and his role in shaping the party's alliances in the state.
Assam is all set to hold the assembly elections later this year.
